If you’re interested in sustainability there’s good news from U.S. soybean farmers.
With increased consumer and government interest in replacing petroleum-based products with those made from or with biobased resources, the interest in evaluating the energy and environmental impacts of these products has also increased.
The United Soybean Board commissioned an update of the cradle-to-gate data for soybean production and conversion of soybean oil and meal into key soy-derived feedstocks to calculate life cycle inventories (LCIs).
Sample findings:
- Twenty percent less direct energy used in soybean farming.
- Soybean processing facilities reduced direct energy consumption by 45 percent compared to 1998 data.
